Moth
What was hitting the window last night whilst I read in bed? It was a huge moth about as large as my handspan which is relatively small. Probably a Hawk moth but I'm sure I've not seen one that large.
There is every likelyhood it was a Giant Peacock Moth [Saturnia pyri] Grand-Paon-de-nuit. We blogged abot it here [http://le-moulin-de-la-forge.blogspot.fr/2012/05/things-that-go-bonk-in-night.html] and Susan from Days on the Claise commented that there seem to be a lot about this year. Also on the wing and whacking the glass are the Privet Hawkmoths which are quite large... but not as big as the Giant Peacock. Tim
